Artists Statement/ Biography

Most of my work has roots in both process and representational painting. I use these practices to delve into my surroundings and to gain a more in depth knowledge of the outside world; as well as important current issues. Although my work is most often representational it is an amalgam of my perception of the world. The subject matters that I work with are things that touch me in terms of a memory or their poetic nature.

To create a body of work I start off by collecting research that pertains to my subject. I gather sketches, photographs and literature and look into the work of other artists which seem to have a correlation with my own. I also take walks through different natural environments to jumpstart my method.  I work with oil paint because it affords me a lengthy period of time in which to work into and realize the image. Through the addition of many layers of paint I am able to better develop a relationship with my subject.

Born in 1987, I grew up in Guelph, ON before moving to Toronto and completing my Fine Arts degree at the Ontario College of Art and Design. After finishing I made the move back to Guelph to help support its up and coming arts community. I’ve shown in both Guelph and Toronto and have gathered a number of private collectors.

  1. Hi Melanie: As the convener for Art in the Park @ Brights Grove, Ontario (just outside Sarnia) I’m always looked for new & talented artists to participate in our show. Now in our 28th year, we have 100 artisans scattered amongst the trees in Wildwood Park, home of the gallery, on the shores of Lake Huron. Our exhibitors come from all over southwestern Ontario as do our visitors. Please take a look at our website for more info. Having checked out your website-your work is excellent-we’d be delighted if you would consider applying to our show -always the Saturday after Labour Day (the 12th this year). Please feel free to contact me with any questions, etc. and I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards, Sandi, Convener The Villages of Art in the Park
